In-person learning planned for 2020-21 school year

by Julie Virnstein | Jun 26, 2020 | all schools, Uncategorized

Denver Public Schools announced today its plans for reopening for the 2020-21 school year. STRIVE Prep schools will be following DPS guidelines and remaining aligned with them on the policies and procedures in place to ensure student and teacher safety. We are also following guidance from the Metro Denver Partnership for Health, representing seven counties in the Metro area.

Based on this week’s guidance, public health experts believe that we can safely open schools in a full-time, in-person environment in the fall with some strict safety precautions in place. Based on this recommendation, DPS and STRIVE Prep students should plan to return in-person in fall.  During this time, there is no “right” answer to what school should look like during the COVID-19  pandemic, but we are relying on expert guidance to come up with the best plan possible. This recommendation is based primarily on two factors: evidence that children both contract and transmit COVID at lower rates than adults, and that the physical, emotional, and intellectual costs of being out of school are considered more significant when weighed against these lesser health risks.

Here are some of the more important points to consider for school opening:

  • There will be health screenings of all students and staff arriving to schools
  • Masks will be required inside
  • Class schedules will be adjusted to keep groups of students together and limit student movement throughout the day
  • There will be no assemblies or large gatherings; meals will likely be eaten inside classrooms
  • Hand washing and sanitizer will be used regularly
  • The entire school building will be disinfected regularly
  • Children will have an option to not come to school and participate 100% in remote learning provided by STRIVE Prep. DPS is planning to survey families more about this option in the coming weeks

Superintendent Susana Cordova did a Facebook Live presentation today with some questions and answers around the reopening. Please take some time to view the video, both English and Spanish are available. You can also read more in this DPS update. For STRIVE Prep specific questions, please join us for a Facebook Live meeting with Founder and CEO, Chris Gibbons on July 9, 10 a.m. for Spanish and 10:30 a.m. for English.

August 17 is the first day of school and a lot can change until that time; we will continue communicating information as it becomes available. Keeping your child and STRIVE Prep teachers safe and healthy is our priority right now.

Both DPS and STRIVE Prep are aware that the COVID-19 crisis is not over and many states are seeing spikes in cases. We know that by taking precautions, such as wearing a mask and hand washing, transmission is greatly reduced and we encourage you to continue these practices. If Colorado and our schools see an increase in cases, we will work with the district to implement one of our back-up plans for the 2020-21 school year.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
