New legal change aims to hurt charter schools and we need your help

by Julie Virnstein | May 6, 2021 | all schools

We need your support! Charter public schools in Colorado are facing a legal change that would make it very hard for our schools to exist. This includes all STRIVE Prep schools.

As part of the STRIVE Prep community, we need your helpi telling your State representative and Representative Jennifer Bacon, who is a DPS board member and a state representative, that you support your school and do not agree with the new proposed change that will limit charter schools’ ability to operate.

Make your voice heard here!

STRIVE Prep schools are part of the Denver Public School district and follow the state’s guidelines on how we operate. Every so often, we make appeals to the school board which allow us to open new schools, continue operating existing schools and make decisions about closing schools. This new bill removes our ability to make appeals to the school board, essentially cutting us out of the decision-making process about all of our STRIVE Prep schools. They are taking away our voice and planning to make decisions without us!

Charter public schools make up about 23% of the schools in DPS and are some of the best performing schools in the district. This proposed change affects the more than 20,000 charter public school students in DPS, including 3,700 students attending STRIVE Prep. That’s a lot of students and families who will be affected by this change! This bill removes protections we have under state law to protect our flexibility which is one of the things that makes us great – our flexibility allowed us to shift teaching and support for our students and families quickly this year during COVID, for example.

Take two minutes to email State Representatives to tell them to vote NO on HB21-1295, a bill that would harm charter schools across Colorado. Click here for everything you need to know and make your voice heard today.

Email your representatives now!
